| Fuel Bug Contamination - Biocide or Treatment? |
|
|
|
|
Fuel bug contamination is a serious and major problem. A fuel tank that is badly infested with the bug should be treated with caution or major problems will occur.
The long-accepted solution is to kill the bug instantly with biocide. But to just throw in a dose of biocide will not solve the problem – in fact it could, very quickly, create a potentially dangerous situation.
When added to the fuel in the tanks, the first few doses kill much of the bug population, but the dead bio mass drops to the bottom of the tank forming sludge. However, small groups of bugs survive, protected by the slime they produce, and given the right conditions the ‘bug’ population quickly regenerates, requiring yet more biocides. This repetitive process increases sludge in the tanks, which has to be removed to ensure safe operation of the engine or fuel starvation will occur - no fun if you are battling against force 8 gales and strong currents. Some bug species are known, over time, to become immune to regular doses of biocide creating ‘super bugs’ that actually treat it as a food source.
More important, biocides will not remove the water that the bug needs to survive. As long as water remains in the tank, the Bug WILL re-infest.
Biocide is a deadly poison and should be handled with great care.
Other more environmentally responsible, safe to handle products are available and have been effectively used by thousands our customers for years. The Diesel Bug thrives at the fuel / water interface, using oxygen in the water to “breathe”. Without water the bug cannot take up residence or survive. Fuel Set works by removing water from the fuel, thus slowly suffocating the Bug, dissolving and dispersing the dead cells so they can pass through the fuel filter.
These types of products do not work to kill the bug instantly, but they do this very well (and with no clogged filters) over a period of time. Fuel Set’s other benefits include removal of water (which can do untold harm to an engine) and lowering exhaust emissions, as well as cleaning your fuel system and improving fuel economy.
For the non-technical: think of Fuel Set as the inoculation that will prevent a disease, or prevent it recurring. The biocide is the equivalent of the drugs to “cure” the disease, but the drug does not prevent the disease coming back and it may have nasty side effects.
So if you are looking for a safe, efficient, environmentally responsible treatment that could also lower your fuel bills and maintenance costs, it might be prudent to check out the products that do more than just kill the Bug. From a value for money perspective it makes sense to choose a product that gives you more benefits. And from the environmental angle there is no contest.
Note: If a biocide has already been used, Fuel Set can be used alongside it to provide these additional benefits. The products act differently so will not cause a harmful reaction, for example. However, Fuel Set cannot be expected to clear up a huge mass of dead cells instantly, as its water removing, surfactant action works over time to break down the biomass.
